I paint or stamp all designs by hand using a mixture of dye and sodium alginate (kelp).  This results in a permanent design that is soft to the touch and won't fade or crack.  However, once something is painted,  there is no "erase," so occasionally there are imperfections.  Of course, this also means that each design is unique and special.
